Associate Principal
Marcelo Figueira is a passionate city building advocate to enable better cities, suburbs and regions through urban design and sustainability, exploring urbanism through innovative lenses and ideas. He is a strategic and innovative professional with extensive Canadian experience in community planning and urban design built on progressive experience and responsibilities while practicing civil engineering and urban planning in Brazil. Marcelo has applied this knowledge and competencies to lead comprehensive planning projects such as intermunicipal and municipal development plans, growth studies, downtown area redevelopment plans, transit oriented development, land use bylaws, and real estate developments (master plans and rezoning applications) in the Capital Region, Edmonton-Calgary corridor, and northern Alberta.
Marcelo also is a catalyst for new thinking on Urban Planning and Urban Design at GSA. With his urban planning background and his community involvement, brings new perspectives and fresh approaches. Marcelo brings a wealth of community and industry connections. His portfolio includes Mill Woods Transit Oriented Development (RioCan Inv. Trust Inc.), Alberta Research Council Master Plan, City Camrose Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan, and large Real Estate infill projects for private developers such as John Day Developments, Pangman Developments, Maclab Developments, Open Sky Developments, and Probus Management.
Marcelo has a senior leadership role at GSA. He holds a Master of Environmental Design (Planning) and a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Calgary, and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado in Brazil. Prior to joining GSA, Marcelo has also served as Senior Planner and Associate at firms in Edmonton and Calgary.
