Client: Pinto Properties Inc.
Role: Rezoning Application, Planning Advisory, Urban Design
Year: 2020-22
Project Description:
Green Space Alliance (GSA Consulting Inc.) was retained by Pinto Properties Inc. to provide Planning and Urban Design services on their rezoning application in the McKernan, a mature neighbourhood in Edmonton. The project, called Metro 78, comprises two seven-storey buildings at the doorsteps of the McKernan-Belgravia LRT station. Metro 78 is an example of quality development in Edmonton that breaks the cycle of car-oriented design and culture. It will be a car-free development in McKernan. The proposed concept started from a simple idea – make housing more equitable through transit-oriented development. The owner of Pinto Properties took cues from his observations of how people in Europe live more locally and do not need a car. Metro 78 will be a beacon for the neighbourhood. People already access both the east and west residential areas from the LRT at this location. This pedestrian gateway is a foundation feature in the McKernan-Belgravia Area Redevelopment Plan. The goal is to reconnect the east and west side community bisected by 114 Street.
